College of Science Excellence Awards

The College of Science Staff Advisory Council (CoSSAC) organizes and puts on the College of Science Staff Excellence Awards Luncheon/Bruncheon on behalf of the College of Science Dean’s office each Spring Semester. The event is an opportunity to thank the College of Science staff for all of their work throughout the year.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

The department heads nominate a staff member from each department for this award. A staff member must be a benefits eligible employee.  This does not include faculty members, post-docs or students.

IS THERE A LIMIT TO HOW MANY TIMES A PERSON CAN WIN?

Staff members are eligible to receive the The Staff Excellence Award every 2 years.

HOW DO I NOMINATE SOMEONE?

The nomination must come from the department head and will require 2 supporting letters, one must come from the department head AND/OR the nominee’s supervisor. An email is usually sent out by Lisa Bianco in the Dean's office in January or February to the CoS department heads and they are responsible for choosing the departmental nominees.

CRITERIA

 Each department is responsible for having their own own set of criteria for this awards. Some examples may be:

  • Performs extra duties substantially beyond those normally assigned.
  • Performs other roles when the department is short-staffed.
  • Volunteers to serve on a department or University committee and contributes to its success.
  • Has developed new work methods that reduce waste or stretch resources.
  • Makes creative suggestions that save the department time & money.
  • Provides services to others that are beyond assigned responsibilities.

DEADLINES

Lisa Bianco in the Dean's office usually sends out an email in January or February to all CoS department heads to collect awardee names and their letters. All letter should be submitted by end of March the latest and once all letters are received, they are given to the Dean for review and to choose who wins the overall winner. 

AWARD DATE and PRESENTATION

 The Staff Excellence Luncheon/Bruncheon usually takes place at the Student Union South Ball Room in early April. A save-the-date announcement usually goes out late January or early February. The RSVP email goes out in March and all planning to attend must RSVP in order participate in this event. 

Staff members who receives this award will receive a $200 award paid by the department. The individual who receives the overall winner will receive an additional $200 award paid by the College of Science Deans' office.
